The Good and The Bad

My parents and Grandmother came to visit me the first week in June and it was lovely. Probably one of the best weeks I have had in Guatemala yet. I miss my family sooooo much and it was really special to me to see them. The last time was in December when I went home for a month.

We stayed around Antigua for several days before leaving, because my grandmother has never seen Antigua. I think she really liked it. yea.
My dad-crazy- decided to rent a car and we drove to Tikal. Actually I was really happy to ride in the car, way better than a bus. The drive was absolutely gorgeous and worth every road bump we crossed. Just for your information the road bumps, or speed bumps were EVERYWHERE. I swear in a span of 15 minutes driving we would cross at least 30 or so, it became ridiculous.

It was great spending time with them, traveling and just showing them where I live now. I am really close to my family, so it is hard not to see them as much as I would like. We talk often thanks to skype.

That is the good. And now the bad...

When you are really close to people and you aren´t able to be around them when you want or need them, it gets emotionally hard. I didn´t realize how much I missed them or what I felt I was missing until they left. This is not a sob story, it is just the honest truth. I felt kind of lost without them here. For the past couple of years I haven´t been living all that close, and actually according to miles, I am closer to them now than when I was in MD - but it doens´t feel that way. You take for granted the things you have near.
I know I will see them soon, and we talk every week, but having them here with me was awesome.

I love you.

I am living in a Suitcase

Probably the worst thing about living here thus far has been all of the moving I have done. I admit it, it is allll my fault, ohhh well, it is what it is.

Here are all of the places I have managed to move into in order.

1. Guest house - when I was teaching English
This place was nice. I had my own, large room with a private bathroom. We had a lady there all day, and leave at night. She would clean and cook for us. She was so lovely, but never fed us enough, I always was starving and spending my hard earned cash on more food! haha

2. I moved into Guest house #2 after complaining to my boss about the place I was at. The once so nice place turned totally scary when a way too friendly male figure moved in. Guest house 2 was great, I was with my friends and had really good meals in the beginning (in the beginning). It was the same situation, as previous. I had my own room and private bathroom. We had a lady cook and clean for us every day. I stayed here for 2 months, then I quit my job, therefore, had to move...

3. Host mom, house #3. I moved here temporary while I looked for a new place to live. I went back to see my parents and decided that I was in need of a change - A new place to sleep. I knew of this wonderful lady that I could rent a bedroom in her other place weekly. I ended up staying a month and I really enjoyed it. Although it was really pricey, I got free meals and laundry. I had my own room, tiny and no private bathroom. I used my friends' places a lot to shower bc I had no pressure and no hot water. I think this place made me stronger. ha

4. After living there for a month it was time to have my own space again with friends. We found a house and I lived with two friends. This place was the best!!! I had my own room, that was huge. And although I shared a bathroom (with a girl) we had steaming hot water and the best pressure one could find. Another good thing was we had different schedules, they worked nights and I worked mornings, so we never saw each other and got on each others nerves. I was back to cooking, or more like the start of cooking! We lived here about 5 months, then EVERYONE LEFT....

5. Place number 5. I am here. It is small and wonderful and I love it. I have internet, hot water, my own bathroom and place. I finally feel like I can make this home.
Fingers crossed I won't be moving for a little while.

Moving is such a drag.

Happy 1 Year

I have officially been in Guatemala for 1 year. YEA I MADE IT!!!!

This is a compliation of things I have learned, enjoyed and would never do again...

1. Teaching English, it was fun and I would do it again - but not here
2. The rainy season, means rain. Rain boots - great invention. Learned this a year too late. :)
3. I honestly don't know the language as well as I was hoping to know it...still a work in progress
4. Reevaluate my wardrobe before moving. What the heck was I thinking bringing some of that crap
5. Some of the cheapest meals have been fresh fruits and veggies
6. Make sure you have a little extra cash, retail therapy really does work
7. Never buy movies....download, download, download
8. I am not as strong as I thought I was
9. Some good friends visited me when they had the chance - great times, would never take that away. I learned so much from them while they were here
10. I am still a control freak
11. I had my parents and grandmother come - the best time of the year for sure!!!
12. I am spoiled, but I would like to think I am changing my ways
13. It took me almost 6 months to be able to eat rice (I had a really bad experience)
14. Dreaded my hair - love it.
15. I will never wash my clothes by hand again, NEVER.
16. I never learned how to cook rice. For some reason I can not get the concept down. Sucked it up and bought a rice maker!
17. Walking on cobblestone streets can really mess up your hip and sciatic nerve. Never hurt your sciatic nerve, pain you don't want to feel.
18. I wished I visited more places - good thing I am not leaving yet. :)
19. Met some of the coolest people. I hope to stay in touch
20. I am no longer scared of dogs! Thanks to the random street dogs, I have conquered my fear.
21. I have hiked 2 Volcanoes thus far...and counting
22. I have celebrated my 27th birthday here, and about to celebrate my 28th! Sushi night is in order!!!
23. Speaking of celebrations, I have see/participated in way more celebrations/parties here in 1 year than I ever did in the states throughout my life!!
